Holloman AFB

Located in in Otero County, New Mexico.

Originally founded as Alamogordo Army Air Field in 1942, it was renamed Holloman Air Force Base on January 13, 1948, in honor of the late Col. George V. Holloman, a pioneer in guided missile research.

Donald Menzel saw a UFO near here on May 12, 1949 — a sighting which did not become public until the 1970s.

The first US animal in space was ENOS, a chimpanzee trained at Holloman’s HAM facility (the Holloman Aero-Medical Laboratory).
