John Charles Frémont or Fremont
(January 21, 1813 – July 13, 1890)

1845 – expedition with Kit Carson to find source of Arkansas River
1846 – heads for California instead, provokes war, takes control of Bear Flag revolt, murders various people
1847 – proclaimed himself military Governor of California, resulting in court martial for mutiny and insubordination. (Presidential commutation.)
1849 – gold rush fortune
1850 – Elected one of first two CA senators
1856 – first presidential candidate of the new Republican party
1861 July 1 – put in command of Department of the West
1861 Aug 30 – emancipated Missouri (against Lincoln’s wishes)
1864 – runs as radical republican presidential candidate (against Lincoln)
1878 to 1881 – governor of AZ
1890 July 13 – dies destitute in NYC
